The Winnipeg Jets wins their second Avco Cup with a 4-0 sweep of the New England Whalers. It is the sixth season of the WHA. In a unique move, two international All-Star teams, the Soviet All-Stars and Czechoslovakia All-Stars, play games that count in the regular season standings. They play each WHA team once, on the WHA team's home ice. The Soviet team has a respectable showing, winning three, tying one and losing four; while the Czech team wins once and ties once, losing six. This marks the first time International teams compete in regular season competition in a major professional sports league in North America.

Marc Tardif of Quebec leads the league in points (154), goals (65) and assists (89) and claims the Gordie Howe trophy as league MVP. Winnipeg's Ulf Nilsson shares Tardif's assist mark with 89 of his own, and his teammate Bobby Guindon is named MVP of the AHL playoffs. The Whaler's Al Smith (3.22 GAA, 2 shutouts) wins the Ben Hatskin Trophy as the WHA's top goalie. Gordie Howe and his sons Mark and Marty are now in New England. Gordie is still going strong with 96 points on 34 goals and 62 assists at age 49!
