This is final year of The New York Islander's incredible dynasty. The Islanders win their fourth consecutive championship sweeping the Edmonton Oilers 4-0 in the Stanley Cup finals. No major American professional sports team has won four titles in a row since. Edmonton, whose dynasty is about to begin, breaks its previous record for most goals scored in an NHL season (417) with 424. Boston leads the league in total points with 110, but falls to the Islanders 4-2 in the Prince of Wales Conference finals. Only three other teams finish with 100+ points (Edmonton 106, Philadelphia 106 and Chicago 104).

Edmonton's Wayne Gretzky easily wins Hart Memorial MVP honors as he leads the league in points (196), goals (71), and assists (125) for the second consecutive season. Boston's Pete Peeters (2.37 GAA, .903 SV%, 8 shutouts) wins the Vezina trophy as the NHL's top goalie. Billy Smith (2.69 GAA, .913 SV%) claims Conn Smythe honors for his superior play in the net for the Islanders during the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Blackhawk's right winger Steve Larmer (43 g, 47 a, 90 pts) takes home the Calder Memorial Trophy as rookie of the year.
