Montreal ends Toronto's three year reign as champions by beating them four games to two in the first round of the playoffs. The Canadiens go on to hoist their 13th Stanley Cup, defeating the Chicago Blackhawks in a finals series that stretches to seven games. Detroit's 87 regular season points are tops in the league. The Blackhawk's Bobby Hull brings home Hart Memorial honors as league MVP, while Montreal's Jean Beliveau wins the first ever Conn Smythe Trophy for MVP of the playoffs. Stan Mikita is the league's top scorer with with 87 points (28 goals, 59 assists). 40 year old Johnny Bower (2.38 gaa) and Terry Sawchuk (2.56 gaa) of Toronto are the best goalie tandem in the league and receive the Vezina Trophy.
