About a third of the way into the season, the Pittsburgh Penguins replaced their head coach Mike Johnston with their farm-team coach Mike Sullivan. The move paid off big time as the Pens ended the season hoisting their fourth Stanley Cup and first since 2009. Veteran goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury suffered a late season injury and was replaced with un-tested rookie Matt Murray. The rookie goalie and other young Penguins including Connor Sheary and Patrick Rust stepped up in the playoffs to help Pittsburgh earn it's fourth championship.
For the first time in 45 years and only the second time in league history, the playoff field consisted of only U.S. based teams. None of the seven Canadian squads qualified. The San Jose Sharks, led by veterans Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau, made it to the finals for the first time in franchise history. The Washington Capitals won the Presidents Trophy with a whoping 120 points, but failed to advance beyond the second round of the playoffs. There were nine other teams with 100 points or more: Pittsburgh (104), Florida (103), New York Rangers (101), New York Islanders (100), Dallas (109), St. Louis (107), Chicago (103), Anaheim (103) & Los Angeles (102).
Chicago's Patrick Kane led the league with 106 total points (46 goals, 60 assists). Alex Ovechkin was once again the league's top scorer with 50 goals. Ottawa's Erik Karlsson led the league in assists with 66. Tampa Bay's, Ben Bishop topped all goaltenders with his 2.06 GAA, while Brian Elliot of St. Louis lead the league with a 93.0 save %.
