At the tender age of 18, Buffalo's Tom Barasso (2.86 gaa) wins Calder Memorial rookie of the year honors, and the Vezina Trophy as the league's top netminder. Montreal's enforcer, Chris Nilan leads the league with 338 penalty minutes. Five teams crack 100 points in the regular season (Edmonton 119, Boston 104, New York Islanders 104, Buffalo 103, and Washington 101).
