The Montreal Canadiens claim their 18th Stanley Cup, defeating the Chicago Blackhawks 4 games to 2 in the finals. The league welcomes two new teams, the New York Islanders and Atlanta Flames. Boston's Phil Esposito (55 goals, 75 assists) grabs the Art Ross trophy as the league's top scorer, while Philadelphia's Bobby Clarke (37 goals, 67 assists) is named league MVP. Montreal's Ken Dryden (33-7-13, 2.26 gaa) hoists the Vezina trophy as the league's best goalie, and his teammate Yvan Cournoyer claims Conn Smythe honors for his stellar performance in the playoffs. The Canadiens lead the league with 120 regular season points. Boston (107), New York Rangers (102), Chicago (93), Buffalo (88), Detroit (86), Philadelphia (85), Minnesota (85) and St. Louis (76) are the other playoff teams.
