The second season of the WHA. The legendary Gordie Howe comes out of retirement at age 45 to play with his sons Mark & Marty. The Howe family leads the Houston Aeros to an Avco Trophy Championship victory and papa Gordie hits 100 points (31 goals, 69 assists). Defending Avco Champs, the New England Whalers win the Eastern Divison but fall in the first round of the playoffs to the Chicago Cougars. The defending Western Division Champion Winnipeg Jets slip all the way to 4th place, but it wasn't any fault of Bobby Hull who had 53 goals and 42 assists for the Jets. Minnesota Fighting Saints left winger Mike Walton leads the league in goals (57) and points (117). Houston's Don McLeod is the league's top goalie with a 91.1% save percentage and 2.56 gaa.
