ICE NUTZ NHL 2016-17 SEASON TEAM CARDS
In the 100th year of the NHL, the Pittsburgh Penguins win their 5th Stanley Cup over a surprising Nashville Predators squad. The victory makes the Pens the first back-to-back champions in almost twenty years when the 97-98 Detroit Redwings accomplished the feat.
After producing zero playoff teams the previous season, Canada sends five representatives (Calgary, Edmonton, Montreal, Ottawa & Toronto) to the NHL's second season in 2017. The Ottawa Senators make it all the way to the Eastern Conference finals and shove Pittsburgh to the brink, in a punishing series that climaxes with an incredible, double overtime game 7 finish. Again, the Washington Capitals win the Presidents Trophy with 118 points, but once again find themselves snake-bit in the playoffs with a second round exit at the hands of their bitter rival. A new tradition begins in Nashville with hopeful fans launching lucky catfish onto the home ice, while watching their cinderella Predators skate all the way into the Stanley Cup Finals.
Edmonton's young phenom Connor McDavid is the league's top scorer and MVP with 100 total points (30 goals, 70 assists). Penguin's Sidney Crosby scores the most goals (44) and earns another Conn Smythe trophy as playoffs MVP. Sergei Bobrovsky of the Columbus Blue Jackets wins the Vezina as the league's top goaltender with an impressive 2.06 GAA, and 93.1 save %.
