THE 1981 SEASON:

A new NFL super dynasty is born as the San Francisco 49'ers defeat the Cincinnati Bengals 26-21 in Super Bowl XVI. The victory nets the Niner's their first of four Lombardi trophies earned in the decade. The 1981 playoffs produce some of the most iconic moments in NFL history. "The Epic in Miami" sees the high-flying San Diego Chargers outlast the powerful Miami Dolphins 41-38 deep into overtime, in what is considered one of the most exciting games in NFL history. An exhausted Kellen Winlsow is helped off the field by teammates after playing the game of his career. The very next week, the Chargers aerial assualt and Super Bowl dreams are shattered by the Cincinnati Bengals 27-7 in the "The Freezer Bowl", the coldest game in NFL history in terms of the -37 degree wind chill at Riverfront Stadium. Most famously, the 81' playoffs features "The Catch". The iconic pass play from Joe Montana to a leaping Dwight Clark in the back of the end zone propels the 49'ers to a 28-27 NFC Championship victory over the Dallas Cowboys and officially launches the 49'ers dynasty.
