1958 IOWA HAWKEYES: Iowa finishes 8-1-1 overall and wins the 1958 Big Ten football championship and 1959 Rose Bowl Game. The Hawkeyes are named national champions by the Football Writers Association of America. Consensus All-American QB Randy Duncan leads the top offense in the nation and finishes second in the Heisman vote. Notable players: Randy Duncan, Curt Merz, Willie Fleming, Don Norton, Bob Jeter, Mac Lewis, John Nocera.
1997 NEBRASKA CORNHUSKERS: The Cornhuskers compile a perfect 13–0 record and claim their third national championship in four years. Nebraska is ranked first in the final Coaches Poll, but ranks second behind 12-0 Michigan in the final AP Poll. Of the 20 official championship selectors designated by the NCAA, 13 select Nebraska as national champions, six select Michigan, and one declares them co-champions. It remains one of the most hotly contested national championship debates in college football history. Notable players: Scott Frost, Grant Wistrom, Ahman Green, Aaron Taylor, Jason Peter, Mike Rucker, Joel Mackovicka, Chad Kelsay.
1966 NOTRE DAME FIGHTING IRISH: The 1966 Notre Dame squad goes undefeated with nine wins and one tie and becomes the eighth Irish team to win the national title. It is the first championship under coach Parseghian. Notre Dame outscores their opponents 362–38. Notable players: Nick Eddy, Jim Lynch, Tom Regner, Alan Page, Rocky Bleier, Paul Seiler, Larry Conjar.
1980 PITTSBURGH PANTHERS: Then the 11-1 Panthers are named national champions by NCAA-designated major selectors DeVold System, Football Research and The New York Times, but finish 2nd to Georgia in the final AP and Coaches Polls. The team is loaded with future NFL talent. Notable Players: Dan Marino, Rick Trocano, Russ Grimm, Rickey Jackson, Mark May, Hugh Green, Greg Meisner.
1977 TEXAS LONGHORNS: Heisman Trophy winner Earl Campbell leads the nation with 1744 yards rushing and the Longhorns finish the regular season with a perfect 11-0 record. However, a 10-38 blow-out loss to Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl costs Texas the national title. Notable Players: Earl Campbell, Alfred Jackson, Dave Studdard, Brad Shearer.
1967 USC TROJANS: The Trojans compile a 10–1 record and finish #1 in the final AP and Coaches Polls claiming their sixth national title in school history. USC outscores their opponents by a combined total of 258 to 87. Eleven Trojans are selected in the 1968 NFL draft including five in the first round. Notable players: O.J. Simpson, Ron Yary, Mike Taylor, Tim Rossovich, Mike Hull, Earl McCullouch, Bob Klein.
1999 VIRGINIA TECH HOKIES: Freshman Michael Vick leads the Hokies to an 11–0 regular season and a national title game appearance in the Sugar Bowl against Florida State. Although Virginia Tech loses 29–46, Vick is able to bring the team back from a 21-point deficit to take a 29–28 lead into the fourth quarter. Notable players: Michael Vick, Ike Charlton, Anthony Midget, John Engelberger, Corey Moore.
