1979 ALABAMA CRIMSON TIDE: Bear Bryant leads the Tide to a perfect 12-0 record, capping off a decade of tremendous success. Alabama is recognized as consensus national champions. Notable players: Don McNeal, Dwight Stephenson, E.J. Junior, Steadman Shealy, Major Ogilvie.    

 

1987 MIAMI HURRICANES: The Cane's defeat Oklahoma 20-14 in the Orange Bowl to win their second national championship in school history. The team is loaded with future NFL draft picks. Notable players: Michael Irvin, Bennie Blades, Brian Blades, Steve Walsh, Brett Perriman, Danny Stubbs, Bubba McDowell, Bill Hawkins. 

 

1971 NEBRASKA CORNHUSKERS: Nebraska (13-0) is undefeated for the second consecutive season and repeats as consensus national champions. The Husker's squad features six first-team All-Americans and nearly two dozen future NFL players. Notable players: Larry Jacobson, Willie Harper, Rich Glover, Jeff Kinney, Johnny Rodgers, Jerry Tagge, Dick Rupert, Carl Johnson, Doug Dumler, Bill Kosch.


1988 NOTRE DAME FIGHTING IRISH: The Irish fight their way to an 11th national championship with a perfect 13-0 record. Along the way Notre Dame defeats teams ranked #2, #4, #5 and #7 in the final AP poll. The team's most memorable victory is a 31-30 upset over #1 ranked Miami, ending the Hurricanes 36 game unbeaten streak. Notable players: Frank Stams, Andy Heck, Michael Stonebreaker, Chris Zorich, Wes Pritchett, Ricky Watters, Todd Lyght, Raghib Ismail, Mark Green, Tim Grunhard.

 

1968 OHIO STATE BUCKEYES: Ohio State (10-0) secures the national title with a 27-16, come from behind victory over USC in the Rose Bowl. This Buckeyes squad is considered one of the strongest in OSU history, fielding 11 All-Americans and six first-round NFL draft picks. Notable players: Jim Otis, Rex Kern, Bruce Jankowski, Rufus Mayes, Dave Foley, Jack Tatum, John Brockington, Ted Provost.

 

2000 OKLAHOMA SOONERS: Bob Stoop's air-raid Sooners leave the runway at the start of the season ranked #19th in the country, and land smoothly at #1 with a 13-2 victory over Florida State in the national championship game. Oklahoma finishes a perfect 13-0 claiming it's 7th national title in school history. Notable players: Quentin Griffin, Josh Heupel, Rocky Calmus, J.T. Thatcher, Ryan Fisher, Andre Woolfolk.

 

1994 PENN STATE NITTANY LIONS: With one of the most prolific offenses in college football history, Penn State (12-0) finishes ranked 2nd in the nation after defeating Oregon 38-20 in the Rose Bowl. Many analysts argue the Nittany Lions should share the national title with Nebraska. Notable players: Ki-Jana Carter, Kerry Collins, Kyle Brady, Phil Yeboah-Kodie, Brian Gelzheiser, Bobby Engram, Jon Witman, Kim Herring.

 

1972 USC TROJANS: John McKay's Trojans finish a perfect 12-0 and are named consensus national champions after a 42-17 drubbing of Ohio State in the Rose Bowl. Ten Trojans are selected in the 1973 NFL draft, three in the first round. Notable players: Sam Cunningham, Charle Young, Lynn Swann, Anthony Davis, Pete Adams, Jeff Winans, Allen Gallagher, Edesel Garrison, Mike Rae.
