NBA 1977-78 SEASON CARD SET

Before the days of Jordan, Bird and Magic there was Gervin, Maravich and Dr. J. With the 3 point shot still a couple of years away, it was the era of the Big Man and centers like Jabbar, Walton, McAdoo, Cowens, Lanier, Malone and others dominated the league. The 77'-78' season saw a wide open playoff field. The Portland Trailblazers (58-24) were the best team in the league and a clear favorite to repeat as champs until all-world center and league MVP Bill Walton suffered an ankle injury and was lost for the playoffs. Walton's injury opened the door for an underdog to rise from the West and the 4th seed Seattle SuperSonics (47-35) relied on their smothering defense to capture the conference banner. Meanwhile in the East, the Washington Bullets (44-38) shocked the world by upsetting the heavily favored, Philadelphia 76'ers (55-27), led by Julius Erving 4-2 in the conference finals. The Bullets would go on to defeat the SuperSonics 4-3 in a highly contested series to win their first and only NBA championship. The 77'-78' Washington squad has the lowest regular season record of any NBA champion in history to date.

San Antonio's George Gervin led all scorers with 27.2 points per game. Truck Robinson of New Orleans topped all rebounders with 15.7 per game, while New Jersey's Kevin Porter led the league in assists with 10.7 per game. Walter Davis (24.2 ppg) of Phoenix claimed Rookie of the Year honors.
